Candle Safety

Candle Safety Guidelines

  1. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  2. Keep children and pets away from lit candles.
  3. Candles other than jar candles must be used in an appropriate non-flammable holder.
  4. All candles should be placed in a safe, heat resistant dry surface.
  5. Do not let wick trimmings, matches or any foreign matter collect inside the wax pool. This flammable material might create a fire hazard.
  6. Burn candles away from drafts, other heat sources, and all flammable objects or materials.
  7. Never allow candle flame to touch any glass surface.

Safety Guidelines For Jar Candles

  1. Handle with care, as the container is fragile. Do not use if jar is cracked, chipped or scratched.
  2. Place on protected, heat resistant, dry surface, well away from anything flammable, and out of reach of children.
  3. Keep wick trimmed to 1/4" or less at all times. Keep candles free of wick trimmings, matches or other matter.
  4. Do not allow flame to directly touch side of glass container, as it could crack the glass.
  5. Keep wick trimmed and centered.
  6. Sides and bottom of container may become hot while candle is burning. Handle carefully.
  7. Discontinue use when 1/2" of wax remains. This will prevent possible heat damage to the counter surface or the container itself.
  8. If the jar has a lid, wait a few minutes after extinguishing the flame to replace the lid. This will prevent pressure from building up and cracking the glass.
  9. Store in a cool, dry place. Exposure to moisture might inhibit relighting. Color, fragrance and specific usage affect wax consumption. It is normal for some wax to be left lining the edges of the container.

Safety Guidelines For Votives

  1. Votives should always be used in an appropriate holder. Place on a safe, heat-resistant, dry surface.
  2. Keep the wick trimmed to 1/4" at all times. A trimmed wick will inhibit smoking and carbon build-up at the tip of the wick and provides a cleaner burn.
  3. Sometimes a layer of liquid wax may form that allows the wick to fall to the side. To maintain an even burn - keep the wick centered. This will also protect your holder, since a flame that's too close for too long may crack the holder.
  4. Keep the wax pool free of foreign objects such as wick trimmings and matches. They will interfere with proper burning and are flammable.

A Few Final Cautions

  1. Remove labels and tags from candles before burning.
  2. There is a fire and explosion hazard when using candles around aerosol sprays, i.e.. hair-spray or flammable liquids.
  3. Ensure candle containers and holders are made from tempered glass or have a proper glaze.
  4. Use extreme caution when using tea-lights - never leave them unattended.
